Few anticipated Jones and the Patriots to be in this position after 12 games. New England has won six consecutive games with their new quarterback at the helm after a difficult start that saw them go 2-4.
Jones, the fifth quarterback taken in the 2021 NFL draft, has been precisely what New England Patriots head coach Bill Belichick has been looking for – dependable and accurate. He isn’t blowing everyone away with his stats, but he is winning.
In his 12 starts, Jones has 16 touchdown throws and eight interceptions. He’s passed for 2,850 yards on 7.5 attempts for an average of 7.5 yards per attempt. He has completed more than 70% of those passes.
According to The New York Post, NFL Hall of Famer Kurt Warner observed, “What Mac Jones is doing right now is ahead of the game.” “And if Mac Jones continues to play like this, he will have a very successful NFL career….” In my view, he will play a lot in the playoffs, and whether or not he can be a championship quarterback has yet to be decided.
“I’ve seen enough to suggest that if he doesn’t improve, he’ll be able to stay in this league for a long time.” If he can continue to improve and mature, I believe you can say you have a quarterback who can contend for championships in the horizon.”
With the Bills Mafia, Mac Jones and the Patriots are bracing for a tough situation.
Jones’ greatest test of the season will come against the Bills on Monday. The Bills will be the Patriots’ most difficult road opponent to date. As the clubs compete for the division crown, it will be a game with significant postseason implications.
The Bills are not only excellent, but it should be a chilly night on the road as well. There’s also the Bills Mafia.
The Buffalo Blue Mafia is a dedicated club of Bills fans. For their squad, they’ll smash tables and sprint through flames. Jones has never faced a louder, more frightening bunch in the NFL.
Jones believes the enthusiasm level will be at an all-time high when the Patriots arrive in Buffalo, even if he hasn’t witnessed it firsthand. Jones said that he would not be swayed by the Mafia hysteria.
Jones told WEEI in Boston, “I think it’s fantastic energy, but I never attempt to watch or anything.” Jones said, “I simply look at my phone or just sit there.” “However, I suppose some people may appreciate it by looking at it.” But it’s always entertaining to look across the city and see who’s who, no matter where you’re playing.
“I’m aware that they have a sizable fan following. They are quite enthusiastic. They provide a lot of enthusiasm to the games, as well as before and after the games. I’ve seen a lot of bizarre films and other things.”
While Jones intends to reject the Bills Mafia, his colleague Devin McCourty aims to embrace it.
In his 12th season with the Patriots, McCourty has seen it all. When his team lands in Buffalo, the three-time Super Bowl winner knows precisely what to expect. It’s something he’s looking forward to.
“As a Patriot fan in the stands in Buffalo, you have to think twice about how loud you want to shout,” McCourty told WEEI. “There will be a lot of loud Buffalo supporters.” Not only during the game, but also three and a half hours before the game, when our buses arrive. There will be middle fingers involved. We’ll be able to obtain whatever we need. As a competitor, I believe you like that.
“There will be booing, which I believe you relish as a competitor.” You like traveling in a hostile atmosphere. It brings our group closer together. We know it’ll be just the two of us when we go out on Monday night. It’ll be whomever is wearing a Patriots logo — and there may be a few supporters there who we won’t be able to hear — but when you go on the road, it’s supposed to be just you and your group, and you have to perform with that.”
Jones and McCourty have plainly distinct strategies for dealing with the tensions, but what about Patriots coach Bill Belichick? How does he feel about the Bills Mafia?
“It’s clear they don’t like me,” Belichick told WEEI.
