Tom Brady has been in the NFL for a long time, 21 years to be precise. Since his debut, he’s seen a lot of regulation changes and adjustments.
For the most part, Tampa Bay Buccaneers quarterback Jameis Winston has accepted each rule change in stride and moved on. Brady has always been more concerned with winning the next Super Bowl than with battling the league’s rule committee over small tweaks.
Brady, on the other hand, isn’t holding back after a recent — and very significant — change to the NFL’s jersey number regulation.
Tom Brady despises the NFL’s new uniform numbering policy.
During the offseason, the NFL approved this new jersey number regulation, which the Kansas City Chiefs requested. Most of the prior limitations on which numbers particular positions may and cannot wear have been removed by the newly adopted regulation. Tight ends and wide receivers may now wear any number between 1 and 49, as well as 80 and 89. Linebackers may wear 1-59 and 90-99, whereas defensive backs can wear 1-49.
In the great scheme of things, it seems to be a small alteration. Brady, on the other hand, has spent the most of the summer trashing it. Brady slammed the policy on April 22, shortly after it was enacted, and again on September 7:
Brady remarked, “The number rule is insane.” “Today, the men literally altered their numbers. I’m going to play two players that had contrasting preseason statistics. Yes, you must watch video and understand who you are studying, but so must running backs. They need to know who they should block. The offensive line feels the same way. So do receivers who alter their routes in response to blitzes.”
“So one person has a 6, another has an 11, and still another has a 9.” When you break your routes and arrive to your place, they alter every play. It’s going to be very difficult. It’s a solid defensive advantage, which is exactly what it is.”

Will the Dallas Cowboys benefit from the rule?
The Buccaneers open the season against the Dallas Cowboys in Week 1, and Brady is worried that the new numbers rule would help the Cowboys’ defense, according to B/R Gridiron.
Brady is said to place a high value on reading the statistics on the field and utilizing them as a reference when evaluating coverages and routes.
For what it’s worth, the Cowboys and Buccaneers will be wearing opposing colors in Week 1. It shouldn’t be difficult for Brady, a potential Hall of Famer, to see who’s open and who’s not.
Still, it’s natural that Brady is being impacted more than other quarterbacks by this shift. For the last 20 years or more, he’s been reading and responding to defenses in a particular manner. Now, in the space of one offseason, he’s expected to alter that.

Whether or not the Bucs’ jersey numbers are confusing, Brady and the Bucs should be considered favorites against the Cowboys on Thursday Night Football.
The Buccaneers are coming off a dominant Super Bowl run, while the Cowboys are struggling with significant ailments. Quarterback Dak Prescott missed the most of last season due to an ankle injury and is now dealing with shoulder discomfort, while offensive lineman Zack Martin will miss the game due to coronavirus (COVID-19) procedures.
Whether they win or lose, it will be fascinating to watch whether the single-digits in the secondary have an impact on Brady’s performance.
