Abdul-Jabbar started his NBA career in 1969, frequently facing Hall of Famers Wilt Chamberlain, Wes Unseld, and Willis Reed. In 1989, it came to an end against players like Robert Parish, Patrick Ewing, and Hakeem Olajuwon. From Earl Monroe’s early-career brilliance to having a front-row seat to the Michael Jordan show in his latter years, he witnessed a broad span of excellence at all positions. Abdul-Jabbar, on the other hand, has repeatedly downplayed his claim to be the greatest basketball player of all time.
Abdul-Jabbar, Kareem isn’t often taken seriously when it comes to GOAT debates.
Abdul-Jabbar, Kareem compared debates about the NBA GOAT to those about superheroes in a 2018 interview with Marc J. Spears of The Undefeated. In other words, they’re entertaining yet not too serious.
“These GOAT debates are a great way to pass the time while waiting for the pizza to arrive. But they’re on par with the question, “Would you choose flying or invisibility as a superpower?”

Finally, the skyhook king claimed that the idea of a single best player is based on a faulty assumption.
“There is no such thing as the GOAT because every player performs under different conditions. We played a variety of positions, under a variety of regulations, with a variety of teammates, and with a variety of coaches. Every player must adjust to their situation and discover a method to succeed. This isn’t a remake of ‘Highlander.’ It’s possible that there will be more than one.”

He is correct. Because of all the factors, it’s tough to compare players from the same period to one another. Is it possible to travel through time? It’s the equivalent of comparing apples with floor lights.
Kareem would pick a former teammate over Michael Jordan if he had to choose.
Kareem Abdul-Jabbar has a strong argument for becoming the greatest of all time. He earned a total of six MVP trophies, which is a new record. Abdul-Jabbar is the first player in NBA history to be awarded MVP while playing for a team that did not advance to the playoffs. In 1971 and 1985, he was named NBA Finals MVP. If LeBron James lives long enough to be named Finals MVP in 2026, he will equal Abdul-record Jabbar’s of winning the award for the first and last time.
During an appearance on The Dan Patrick Show in 2018, Abdul-Jabbar was questioned about his thoughts on whether Michael Jordan is the GOAT.
“Those individuals most likely did not witness Oscar Robertson or Jerry West in action. Some of the men who used to play when the games weren’t on TV. People appreciate Michael’s athletic abilities, but they just view me as a tall person, therefore their names aren’t on the list. Michael couldn’t do what I did, and I couldn’t do what Michael did.”

In the GOAT argument, Michael Jordan gets more support than Kareem Abdul-Jabbar for many reasons. During Jordan’s career, the NBA was more accessible than it was during Kareem’s. The league received greater publicity via cable television than it did through over-the-air transmission.
Jordan, moreover, had an explosive athleticism that Abdul-Jabbar lacked. The Big Fella flew sky hook after sky hook over disappointed defenders as His Airness waggled his tongue and left enemies powerless in his wake.
During his heyday, Abdul-Jabbar was chastised for not playing hard enough. Seriously. Even at 7-foot-2, he was so elegant that his game seemed to be easy at times. Fans frequently took Kareem for granted since he had been playing at such a high level for so long. At the age of 38, he was named to the NBA First Team. He was guilty of making things seem simple when it wasn’t.
It’s an odd juxtaposition. The big guy beneath the basket, Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, played with an easy flow that belied the hard work he put in to get there. Michael Jordan, the point guard, was more of a force multiplier. With a mix of exceptional athletic talent and sheer force of will, he forced opponents to surrender.
Which is the superior? To be honest, it’s a question of personal preference. The most attractive style of play is most often the determining element.
