In his three years as the starting quarterback, Mahomes led the Wildcats to a combined 38-6 record and won two Texas state championships. Mahomes accepted an athletic scholarship to Texas Tech University, where he played for the Red Raiders football team from 2013 to 2016. He started all four years, setting 19 school records, including total offense (12,097 yards), touchdown passes (92), and passing yards (11,253).

Mahomes was drafted by the Kansas City Chiefs in the first round of the 2017 NFL Draft.
