The 2017 World Series drought ended with the Astros winning their first championship in franchise history. The team had a feeling that they would break through after defeating the Dodgers, but even more than breaking through was bringing an underdog mentality to Houston’s sports scene. Will other teams adopt similar approaches? Where are other areas where this approach can be applied?

Mahomes comments is a quote from the Kansas City Chiefs’ quarterback Patrick Mahomes. The quote was in response to his team’s victory over the New England Patriots in week 15 of the 2018 NFL season.

People questioned this Kansas City Chiefs club following a shaky start to the 2021 season, particularly when Patrick Mahomes continued to throw interceptions. It didn’t matter that this squad had won back-to-back Super Bowls and had one of the game’s top quarterbacks.

Mahomes and the Chiefs delivered in prime time in Sin City on Sunday Night Football, which was a disturbing sight for the NFL. The back-to-back AFC Champions cruised to a 41-14 win against the Las Vegas Raiders at Allegiant Stadium on Monday night.

With it, the NFL must recognize that the Kansas City Chiefs have returned.

On Sunday night, Patrick Mahomes and the Chiefs delivered and silenced the naysayers.

It had been a challenging start to the season, to say the least. Mahomes continued to throw the ball over, Travis Kelce and Tyreek Hill continued to produce duds, and this defense continued to get beaten up week after week.

Although Aaron Rodgers was sidelined and Jordan Love was slinging passes, this club upset the Green Bay Packers a week previously. It wasn’t nice at Lambeau, and the Chiefs were suddenly surrounded by scorn.

Is it possible that the NFL has figured out Mahomes?

Andy Reid has lost his touch, hasn’t he? Are Kelce and Hill nearing the end of their careers?

Sunday night, though, was a different story. Mahomes blasted off in the Raiders’ thrashing, completing 35 of 50 passes for 406 yards, five touchdowns, and zero interceptions.

It was a work of art, and a Kansas City work of art at that. Hill hauled in seven passes for 83 yards and two touchdowns, while Kelce had eight receptions for 119 yards.

Darrell Williams shone in Las Vegas, catching nine passes for 101 yards and a spectacular score on a Mahomes prayer. It was simply one of those nights in Kansas City when everything seemed to be working.

Byron Pringle had a career-high five receptions for 46 yards and a touchdown.

Mahomes has just six touchdown passes and five interceptions in the Chiefs’ last five games. He reversed the script on Sunday night, demonstrating to the world that he is still one of the top players in the NFL — as if that was ever in question.

Following the win, Mahomes sent a chilling message to the NFL that should serve as a warning.

After the triumph, the Chiefs were all grins. Despite the fact that this was Kansas City’s third consecutive triumph, it was reminiscent of the squads they carried to the Super Bowl the previous two seasons.

After the victory, Mahomes delivered an eloquent explanation of how this squad felt in a message that does not bode well for the rest of the NFL, particularly the AFC (h/t KSHB 41’s Aaron Ladd).

“I believe the gear was returned to the whole squad.”

After the Chiefs’ triumph, Patrick Mahomes

Yes, it is not what the rest of the league wants to hear, especially after Mahomes said that he will be aggressive.

The AFC seemed to be up for grabs throughout the first half of the season, with the Chiefs’ offense on autopilot. Is it possible for the Buffalo Bills to get in? Is it possible for the Tennessee Titans to make it to the Super Bowl?

Unfortunately for those teams, if the Chiefs continue to play like today, there will be little competition. On Sunday night, this ensemble was firing on all cylinders.

Even the defense was able to pull it together. Derek Carr struggled all night, completing just 25 of 35 passes for 261 yards, two touchdowns, and one interception. Carr’s best weapon, Darren Waller, only had four receptions for 24 yards, and Carr led the team in running – never a good indication.

For the record, the Chiefs did quite well the last time they were 6-4 at this stage in the season.

The Chiefs look to be in the driver’s seat for the AFC West — and the AFC as a whole — after only 60 minutes of play.

The Chiefs are now leading the AFC West after the other three teams all lost on Sunday. The Chiefs’ situation, though, does not improve.

The Dallas Cowboys are their next opponent before their bye week. Following the bye, the Chiefs will play each AFC West division opponent in three weeks before meeting the Pittsburgh Steelers and Cincinnati Bengals.

That’s a tough schedule, but if the Chiefs can continue to play like they did on Sunday, it won’t matter who they play or where they play. They don’t proclaim winners in October or November, as Tyrann Mathieu said.

The world is Mahomes’ oyster when he’s on. To discount the Chiefs as playoff prospects, much alone Super Bowl hopefuls, was always premature.

All eyes are on Kansas City this time, and for good reason.
