He recently joined on Gilbert Arenas’ No Chill Podcast to talk about free agency and joining the Bulls, among other things. DeRozan revealed why he chose Chicago as his destination.
The Bulls’ and its fan base’s rich heritage was one of the greatest selling factors for the 32-year-old. DeRozan said, “It was someplace I knew I could just go be myself among a basketball group.” His choice was inspired by the basketball culture in Chicago.
He wanted to challenge himself, therefore he chose the Lakers over the Lakers.
It was simple for me to flee and declare that I would return home and play. But, you know, they’ve already made a name for themselves. They already have everything they need. It’s always meant a lot to me to go someplace and make something unexpected happen.

DeRozan’s college friend was the main reason behind his decision to join the Bulls. At the University of Southern California, Bulls center Nikola Vucevic was a teammate of DeRozan.
In the midst of the 2020 season, the Orlando Magic traded the All-Star center to the Chicago Bulls. The two players have spoken about playing together in the future for a long time. Since DeRozan was set to become a free agent in the summer, Vucevic and DeRozan had a more serious discussion when Vucevic joined the Bulls.
The former Raptor promised his college buddy that the Bulls would be on his mind. The choice “began to make more and more sense” as events unfolded, according to DeRozan.

He remarked of LaVine’s performance with Squad USA in the Tokyo Olympics, “I know the confidence you leave from an Olympic team.” During the regular season, the former UCLA star averaged 27.4 points, 5.0 rebounds, and 4.9 assists.
In the summer, the Bulls signed Lonzo Ball in a sign-and-trade deal with the New Orleans Pelicans. Rich Paul and Klutch Sports have scripted yet another contract success story with Ball. DeRozan praised the young point guard.
DeRozan said, “He hasn’t completely developed into his potential.” “On the court, his I.Q. is incredible.” Ball, he believes, will thrive in his new position in Chicago. His deal demonstrates that the company believes in him as a player, and his new teammate agrees.
